It’s a HIFI Spinoff! Listen to this episode (*link in stories + bio*) to glimpse the magic of what took place at the HIFI Lab this summer and what the dream team of Art 25: Art in the 25th Century + Kathy Jetn̄il-Kijiner are creating for the future. Listen for global Indigenous collaboration, what it means to collaborate through play, for the Library of Salt and its “frozen ocean,” and what it means to be kaleidoscopic. Listen for the radical in everyday acts. Listen for what it means to refuse extinction every day. Listen for refusing imposed timelines. Listen for love being a method. Listen to reject what is trying to hurtle us into annihilation. Listen to reject empire. Listen for wonder and dream and what will set you free. And listen for six tracks chosen to preserve for future generations (spoiler alert: they’re so good) and for so much more. Enjoy!

ABOUT / BIOS
The Hawaiian and Indigenous Future Imaginaries (HIFI) Lab is a small organization dedicated to helping the Hawaiian community to develop future imaginaries for itself. This work is necessary for bringing abundant futures of our choosing into being rather than be subject to the futures others imagine for us. For us, one of the most important tools we have in this work is our imagination, and we cultivate it by bringing Kānaka Hawaiʻi into and/or strengthening pilina with other Indigenous artists from the Pacific and Native North America so we can all imagine infinite possibilities for our futures. HIFI is a place where ʻai pōhaku reimagine our futures and our interactions with ʻāina, kānaka, science, technology, moʻolelo, and mele through an abundance-centered creative and culturally based Kanaka lens.

Art 25: Art in the 25th Century is a dynamic collective comprised of artists Lisa Jarrett (Portland, OR), Lehua M. Taitano (San Francisco, CA), and Jocelyn Kapumealani Ng (Honolulu, HI). It is the culmination of years (and ancestral lifetimes) of shared curiosity, vision, and an outright insistence to see their culture thrive within contemporary art. Art 25 investigates how Indigenous and Black art lives in the 21st century and collaborates with contemporary artists worldwide who envision how it will flourish in the 25th century and beyond. In forming a future archive, the collective interrogates historical access, curation, collection, consumption, and preservation of Indigenous and Black art and culture. Kathy Jetn̄il-Kijiner is a poet of Marshallese ancestry, born in the Marshall Islands and raised in Hawai’i. She currently serves as Climate Envoy for the Marshall Islands Ministry of Environment. Her work focuses on supporting her government in engaging in the multilateral climate space, as well as in developing national policies on climate adaptation. She has a background of creative practice as a poet and artist exploring her culture’s rich storytelling and how these stories converse with climate change impacts and its intersections with the legacy of the US nuclear weapons testing program on the Marshall Islands. She has shared these explorations through written poetry, the curation of poem videos, performances, and art installations. In 2012, she co-founded the Marshallese climate youth nonprofit, Jo-Jikum, and has led the organization of programming and actions on climate change, nuclear advocacy, and arts for Marshallese youth for over 13 years. She currently lives between Majuro, Marshall Islands, and Portland, Oregon in the United States, and has completed a PhD from Australia National University in Pacific Studies focusing on poetry and the RMI’s national adaptation policies.
