Gunna, born Sergio Kitchens in College Park, Georgia, has been performing with a full live band for years, setting himself apart from most rappers who rely on backing tracks. The moment that spread most widely came during a live set where his guitarist moved from “Sold Out Dates” directly into “Yosemite,” a Travis Scott collaboration from 2018, without breaking the groove.
“Yosemite” was produced by Southside and appears on Travis Scott’s “Astroworld.” Gunna’s verse on that song helped cement his reputation as one of the more melodic voices in Atlanta trap, and hearing it rebuilt around a live guitar brought a completely different texture to a song most people only know from the studio version.
The band setup seen in Gunna’s performances typically includes a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and drummer on a TAMA kit running through Marshall amplifiers, which is a full rock-style rig applied to hip-hop material. That combination of live instrumentation and rap delivery is still unusual enough in the genre that a single guitarist transition can rack up hundreds of thousands of views on its own.
