📍Xiqu Centre and 📍HK cultural heritage museum

Having seen so many west end productions, I thought I should go back to my roots and deepen my understanding of Chinese opera.

I did the Tea house theatre experience at Xiqu Centre with my grandma 👵🏻 it’s not a full opera production, they provide breaks in between with explanations and Chinese/English surtitles. There was a Chinese music ensemble which played a few pieces.
Highlights:
🥟 dimsums provided like they do in Chinese opera theatres
🥋4 Elements of Chinese opera: singing, recitation, dance, martial arts
🫪Lee theatre (which is now a shopping mall, with Uniqlo lol) used to be one of the biggest theatres in HK with a rotating stage
🪕Yehu is made from coconuts! Sounds so lovely like a viola, unlike erhu which can be PIERCING at times
🎍theatres made from bamboo scaffolding
🀄️early Chinese opera used 官話 which is a mix of Cantonese and mandarin
🐴there weren’t many props in my show, the actor simply swung his tassel which symbolise the horse’s tail
6️⃣六國大封相 = always gets played at a venue premiere
