DOMI VAN GILS graduated from @amfinl was selected by the Dutch jury to participate in Lichting 2026.
“This collection was developed from a personal experience of sexual assault that happened to me while walking home alone at night. This experience led to research into why women are often taught to adapt their behavior, routes, and appearance in order to avoid danger with the responsibility of preventing violence being placed on women themselves.
In response the nightwalker is an opposing sound to the believe that women should dress a certain way in order to feel safe.
She is a persona who moves through the night with awareness, but without adapting herself to it. The nightwalker is this sensual feminine character that has dominance over the night.
The collection explores taking up space both visually and through sound with moving embellishments making noise when the wearer walks, announcing the nightwalkers presence.
Essentially, this collection questions why women are expected to adapt, hide, and make themselves smaller in order to feel safe.”
Domi is one of 10 participants of Lichting 2026. They will present their work to an international panel and audience during Amsterdam Fashion Week.
