DIGP round 2 was awesome. Saturday, I spent the whole day practicing tight tandems with some unreal drivers and dialed in my lead run. The judges put a heavy emphasis on the first turn, so I spent a long time dialing in a smooth line with full throttle commitment. I felt this run with Dylan was the best example of a lead I was able to do all weekend. I was definitely hyped on it.
Going into qualifying, it started to rain pretty heavily. The DISL drivers got the brunt of the storm. With a heavy deluge mixing it up from the all-dry practice sessions. When DIGP was up, the rain stopped but the track had a solid coating of water. Unsure of the conditions, I went for a conservative run but pushed my speed as some of the other drivers seemed to have more grip than I would expect on a wet blacktop. It seemed to work out as the run was pretty clean and safe. Last year, I had a slow transition in top 32 that looked like a straightening from the outside. I was concerned that i was going to be in a similar situation on the transition between oz3 and 4. I definitely had room for improvement but had a score on the board.
On my second qualifying run, I was feeling a bit more confident in the conditions and tried to push an extra 10%. I focused on pushing closer to oz2 and improving my transition from oz3 to 4. I came up a tad shorter on oz2 than I would prefer but my transition after was much crisper. Overall solid runs earning me 12th position in the DIGP top 16 competition. Given the level of driving seen at this event, I was very happy with that score.
My top 16 battle was with Justin Bailey. We have driven together a bit in the past and I was stoked to go against him. His car is fast, so I focused on entering close and tried to be aggressive in the chase. My transition timing seemed much better than in the past but I could have pushed a little harder after the transition to dive in closer at the beginning of each turn. This was still way better than my previous chase runs in GP, so I am glad the techniques I have been practicing seemed to show some improvements.
My chase is where I dropped the ball. In Justin’s lead, he seemed far inside on OZ2, so I wanted to foc
