Some stories deserve to be told. Some women deserve to be remembered.

What better way to spend Halloween than completely immersed in a story of witch trials, persecution and the women caught in the shadows of history?

Set in Innsbruck in 1485, The Last Witch is a fictional retelling inspired by the real-life story of Helena Scheuberin, and what an extraordinary read it is.

I’ve always been fascinated by the history of witch trials, but there is something particularly powerful about reading a story that gives a voice to a woman who actually lived through such a terrifying period.

C.J. Cooke’s writing is absolutely brilliant. Atmospheric, compelling and beautifully crafted, this was one of those books I simply didn’t want to put down. I was completely absorbed from beginning to end.

But what struck me most wasn’t simply the injustice of what happened in 1485. It was how uncomfortably familiar some of those attitudes towards women still feel today.

Women being dismissed, disbelieved, silenced and punished for daring to challenge expectations. More than 500 years may separate us from Helena Scheuberin, yet misogyny hasn’t disappeared. That realisation left me angry, and perhaps that’s exactly why stories like this matter so much.

We need to remember these women, their courage and the injustices they faced. Their stories should never be forgotten.

I love books that entertain me, but I especially love books that make me think, question and feel something long after I’ve turned the final page.

This wasn’t just a brilliant piece of historical fiction. It was an important, thought-provoking and utterly captivating read.
