Gentrification isn’t just about new buildings. It’s about what happens to the people who were already there.
The Shirley Chisholm building recently opened, yet many people from the community weren’t even aware or invited to the grand opening!
And here’s the uncomfortable part: sometimes the people moving into a neighborhood become uncomfortable around the very people who have lived there for years.
I’ve lived in Flatbush. I know the people. I know the culture. I’m not afraid of my community.
So why should longtime residents be made to feel like outsiders because someone new feels uncomfortable?
Gentrification can change more than a neighborhood. It can change who feels like they belong.

Keep in mind the ‘culture’ is shooting eachother too. You can’t gatekeep NYC it’s been changing as long as it’s been here… lots of different immigrant lived there before you. I don’t hear you crying about the Lenape YOU displaced either

Ummm...thats not on the city. Seems like there is no business alliance. And the businesses there have no pride in that hood to partner with a service like willing and able to keep the whole nostrand strip clean..I say that as some one that lives in the vicinity over 40s years. I was there when st Jerome had white students and home owners..also the culture has change people must pick up after themselves, the old east flatbush did
