So thrilled to win the main prize in the Portrait category with my photo of Alison Spittle at the British Photography Awards! I was so chuffed to see my photo up there alongside the work of actual professional photographers whose work I’ve admired for years. A HUGE thank you to Alison for trusting me with her vision. Her homemade dress made of shower loofahs was genius! A MASSIVE thank you to the judges of the BPAs who I still can’t believe picked my photo out of all the amazing work in the category. This photo is said to show Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in the early 2000s, when he was already one of the most powerful figures in the Sinaloa Cartel. For decades, he managed to avoid capture, operating in the shadows even after his longtime partner, El Chapo Guzmán, was arrested and extradited to the United States. That changed on July 25, 2024, when he was taken into custody in the US after arriving in New Mexico alongside Joaquín Guzmán López, one of El Chapo’s sons. Zambada later claimed he had been kidnapped and taken there against his will. In August 2025, he pleaded guilty to leading a criminal enterprise. In July 2026, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. After decades on the run, El Mayo’s story ended behind bars in the United States.
