Fall 2015, I entered my senior year at the School of Visual Arts, on my way to graduating with a BFA in Photography. I had spent my previous semester studying abroad in Rome, starting what would end up being a very special body of work. That work landed me in a program of 70 students called the Mentor Program. We were given the chance to list dream people we’d like to work with. I put Gerard’s name down first. Half as a joke, half as “wait, that could really happen.” In December, I received an email that “Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance” would be my mentor. We instantly connected in our first email exchange, as if we had known each other our entire lives. We decided I’d come out to LA and spend a week working on this project together. We talked and talked and talkedddd, for hours. About anything and everything; art, music, film, love, death, and everything in between. Gerard was the first person I explicitly came out to, before family and close friends. I felt comfortable and safe to be me without having to put up any sort of front. The body of work that came out of that experience landed me a spot at Art Basel in Miami in 2016. Gerard continued to support me even after the program ended, buying a piece of mine, posting about my work, supporting my lil clothing brand @dimarcobrand and still continues to. I was lucky to find out that Gerard is incredibly genuine, intellectual, sensitive, supportive, and everything I hoped he would be since My Chem came into my life at just 8 years old. There was no weirdness between us of fan/frontman, there was just an immediate, straight-up understanding and acceptance of one another. This post is just a glimpse of some of the special moments. The best ones weren’t captured. They weren’t recorded. They weren’t for anyone but me and this man I idolized my entire life, and the friendship we cultivated over the years. I am so grateful that our paths crossed in this lifetime. Somehow, I always knew they would. Endless love to G and Lynz, Frank, Mikey, Ray, and the hardworking My Chem team + crew. They are truly some of the best people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and knowing. 🖤
