Congratulations to our high school RISES students Ayah Dimachkie, Aatiq Qayyum, Miranda Gao and undergraduate Beatrice Lee in the CRISSP summer research programs! Grateful to Caroline Caetano and Shannon Carroll who mentored the students in Dr. Eric Liao’s lab. Dr. Liao leads as the co-director of the CRISSP which provides a transformative research experience in pediatric research. After meeting Patty Ortiz just once, I knew I wanted to tell her story. Becoming a NASA engineer isn’t easy. It’s rocket science, after all. 🚀 But Patty faced the added challenge of coming from a low-income household, without a blueprint or a role model to show her the way. She drew strength from her mother, who came here from El Salvador to build a better life without knowing anyone or speaking the language. Her mother’s courage helped Patty keep pursuing her own dream. Now, through Kids Need Space, she’s opening doors for children who dream of working in space exploration, becoming the representation she didn’t have growing up.
