Hฤnau ka ua, the rain is born.
โCollect rainwaterโSpirit said. And so we did, rain, springwater, fishpond water, tears, water in its many weathers, external and internal. Hurricane Lala. Our tears on the day of the solar eclipse.
Grateful to a cultural exchange between Sweden and Hawaiสปi Big Island, made possible by Stefan and Jenny, with Lundahl & Seitl and curator Joanna Sandell Wright ๐๐ผ
Thank you Heather Kaluna for pointing us to Hฤnau ka Ua: Hawaiian Rain Names , hundreds of ways to name a rain, each carrying its own place and story.
Thank you Manoa Johansen for taking us to Kaumaui, where we learned about loko iสปa (fishponds). We collected water where an aquifer system emerging from rain and mist on Maunaloa and Maunakea, surfaced as coastal springs. At Honokea Fishpond, we learned about uli, pure cleansing water, in relation to wai สปลlena, water used in purification.
Massive gratitude to Halena Kapuni-Reynolds for bringing us to Hinaสปauสปauwai Spring, near where the Wailoa River meets Waiฤkea Pond.
Alongside the water, we learned about the moon, time, care through the Hawaiian lunar calendar, thanks to Dan OโConnor, Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, UH Hilo.
The Hilo program was thoughtfully curated by Kanani Daley, East Hawaiสปi Cultural Center, our key partner in Hilo ๐๐ผ
