キヤノンユーザーですが親指AFは不要です。言われるように余計な操作が増えるだけ。特に動きものを撮る時に差が出ます。

I use it bc I just find it easier to set my focus on something and recompose than to have to change my af mode.

Half-press and using AE-L/AF-L (to temporarily stop AF or shoot without AF confirmation) works perfect for me. I have preset config with back button focus and lock button only delegated to AE-L. My only use case would be waiting for the subject to arrive a predesignated point during wildlife photography. Like a bird landing to its nest. But I don't remember the last time I used it tbh.

Eye focus is the thing now. I continue to use back-button focus and it works well. I left about 60k photos at my last job, no issues 😂

I personally like using back button focus but I don't see why people are starting wars over it 😂
