Continued….
I went back home this summer - and somewhere between visiting family and doing absolutely nothing productive, I found myself collecting bougainvillea.
It’s the flower of home for me. The thing about bougainvillea is that it doesn’t ask for gentle summers - it thrives in the harshest ones, spilling over every rooftop and boundary wall in colors that shouldn’t work together but somehow do: fuchsia against amber, coral against violet. And the petals themselves are paper-thin, almost translucent in the sun.
I couldn’t leave without trying to preserve some of it.
So I collected, dried and carefully pressed what I could - not knowing yet if it would survive the trip back to Germany, or hold its color, or hold together at all.
It did. And what’s left in my hands now is something that carries a little bit of home in every piece.
More on what became of these petals - next…
