You order a soil test. What actually happens in those 5–7 days? Here’s the full breakdown 👇
Step 1 — Borehole Drilling 🔩
Geotechnical team drills at 3–5 different points across your plot. Usually 4.5 to 6 meters deep, depending on plot size and building load. Soil samples are extracted from different depths.
Step 2 — Standard Penetration Test (SPT) 🔨
A standard hammer is dropped, and the number of blows needed to drive it 300mm into the soil is counted. That number — the N-value — directly correlates with soil strength. Procedure defined in IS 2131.
Step 3 — Lab Tests 🧪
Samples go to the lab for:
🔹 Grain size analysis
🔹 Atterberg limits — reveals if soil is expansive
🔹 Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS)
🔹 Consolidation test — settlement prediction
🔹 Permeability test
🔹 Moisture content
Step 4 — Plate Load Test ⚖️ (optional but valuable)
A plate is placed on-site, controlled load applied, settlement measured. Gives you a direct measurement of actual SBC.
Step 5 — The Report 📋
You get:
✅ Soil strata diagram (layer by layer)
✅ Water table depth
✅ SBC at different foundation depths
✅ Foundation type recommendation
✅ Special precautions
Total time: 5–7 days. Total cost: ₹20,000–₹60,000. 💰
Now the math that most homeowners never do 👇
At H-House Surat, if this ₹20,000 test had been done — ₹4 crore would have been saved.
That’s the math they don’t teach you before you build. 🎯
