California Gov. Gavin Newsom has commuted the death sentences of more than 500 people on the state’s death row, ensuring they cannot be executed by a future administration.

The sweeping action, announced Thursday near the end of Newsom’s term, converts the sentences of 529 men and 19 women to life in prison without the possibility of parole. It represents the largest mass clearing of a death row in modern U.S. history.

Newsom said his decision reflects his long-standing opposition to capital punishment and his belief that executions are incompatible with California’s values. “I take this action because I firmly believe that state-sanctioned killing is incompatible with California’s values, undermines the foundations of our legal system, and diminishes each of us,” Newsom wrote in a letter announcing the commutations.

Nobody remembers the person who almost finished. 🏁🔥

Most people don’t fail at the start. They fail near the end. They get close enough to see the goal, start feeling like they’ve already made it and ease off right when it matters most.

The project gets left at the final stretch. The weight loss stops a few months short. The savings goal gets raided right before it’s reached. The degree, the business, the comeback, all abandoned just before they were finished.

The finish line is there for a reason. Until you’ve crossed it, nothing is guaranteed and nothing is yours. The people who win aren’t always the fastest. They’re the ones who keep running hardest at the exact moment everyone else starts slowing down.

The finish line doesn’t care how close you got. It only rewards the ones who crossed it.
