An Alien Registration Number and the phrase “I love you, mom.” I don’t know exactly when and I don’t know how, but sometime this year I began covering family detention and family separation almost exclusively. Over the last few months, I’ve met so many children whose lives have changed drastically in a matter of hours. One day they’re studying for a math test and the next they’re in a white van surrounded by masked men. One night, their mom is reading them a bed time story and the next they’re wondering if she’s ever coming home. Last week, I met Valery. A brave 6-year-old who proudly read her mom’s A# from a piece of paper and told me it was important to have it handy. She is six. Her mom Adela and older sister Sofia, were at the Dilley immigration processing center at the time. As it happens with most of the cases I cover, I was in awe of Adela’s children. Bright, brave and resilient. It made it difficult to say goodbye, I never want to say goodbye. Today I was able to return. And I witnessed the moment Valery got home from school to a surprise she had been praying for. Her mom, Adela, was released. Her sister is home again too. It was a bittersweet moment. They are happy, but they lost so much. Attorneys @coreysull and @attorneygoldfinch fought ruthlessly for this mother. Yes, I get to shed light on these stories, but they carry the weight. They do the work.

#Clique, Pastor Philip Anthony Mitchell sat down with Cam Newton, and the conversation turned to whether gay people can enter heaven. Mitchell said he believes they can if they repent, place their faith in Jesus Christ and stop acting on their same-sex desires. He also said those feelings may never go away, but under his interpretation of scripture, having the desire and acting on it are two different things. “They may have that urge for the rest of their life, but if they don’t act on it, they don’t sin before God,” he said. Mitchell added that he cannot force someone to be heterosexual, describing his role as teaching scripture and helping them live what he considers a life of holiness. He also emphasized that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, rather than morality alone. #Clique, what are your thoughts on his explanation? 📷Reuters
