This was probably one of our favorite safaris we did in Uganda 🐒

Don’t get me wrong, seeing mountain gorillas up close is an incredible experience. They’re massive, powerful, and absolutely fascinating. But from our experience, we actually felt a much stronger connection with the chimpanzees.

Maybe it’s because they’re one of our closest relatives, but there was something incredibly human about watching them socialize, play, groom each other, and even sit down and quietly observe us. There was a curiosity and awareness in their behavior that made the encounter feel incredibly personal.

And then there’s the experience itself. The chimpanzee trek was considerably easier, and the rangers felt much more flexible with the time. With the gorillas, the one-hour limit felt very strict — even when it took a while to actually find the group. After all the hiking, the cost, and the anticipation, the strict one-hour limit left us feeling like we didn’t quite get the experience we had paid for — especially when part of that hour was spent just trying to see the gorillas behind thick grass.

Still absolutely worth doing? Yes. But if I had to choose which encounter felt more memorable and meaningful, the chimpanzees win by a long shot.
