Dear Sweet Nancy
I’m writing this letter to you—the little girl I once was.
I look at this picture of you from the early ‘90s and I see such a beautiful, sweet, innocent little girl with a heart full of light. You didn’t know everything life was going to bring your way.
There are so many things I wish I could go back and tell you.
There will be ups and downs. There will be times when you desperately need someone to be there for you, protect you, and make you feel safe. There will be moments when you have to become strong much earlier than you should have.
But I would also whisper something very important in your ear:
You are going to make it.
One day, you are going to become the woman who protects that little girl.
You are going to learn that being strong doesn’t mean becoming hard. Your strength will lie in your ability to be both fierce and gentle. You will fight when you need to fight, stand up when you need to stand up, and still keep that softness in your heart.
Life will try you, little Nancy.
But it will never take you away from you.
That smile in this picture will survive more than you could possibly understand right now.
When I look into your eyes today, I don’t just see the little girl I used to be. I see where my story began. I see innocence. I see courage that hadn’t discovered itself yet. And I see a little girl who deserved to feel loved, protected, and safe.
So I’m making you a promise:
I’m going to make you proud.
I’m going to keep becoming the woman you needed when you were little. I’m going to protect your heart. I’m going to speak up for you. And I’m going to give you the love and gentleness you always deserved.
After everything, sweet Nancy...
We’re still here.
We’re still standing.
And we’re still smiling.
