When I saw this photo for the first time, I cried. I don’t know what made me so emotional, nothing about the photo is necessarily sad. It’s a child on a duck boat smiling at the person behind the camera. Maybe what made me so emotional was that this little girl was so excited to be on a boat. Maybe it was because she looked precious with her giant life jacket that made her arm look so tiny. I can’t fully articulate it, but I think I cried because I saw a girl smiling at someone she loved. She looked so happy. She looked so grateful. I don’t even know who she is looking at. This is Kara Powell at age 6. I think I see this photo and cry because every now and again, this girl looks at me like that. I love this girl so much.
