What has long been a form of cultural expression and identity has been carried into contemporary jewelry, sculpture, apparel, and mixed media by artists working today. Finger-woven bandoliers and sashes were common throughout the Southeast, but those made from red wool trade cloth and decorated with bead embroidery in geometric designs are most frequently associated with the Choctaw, Alabama, and Coushatta. The scroll designs on these distinctive shoulder sashes are often said to resemble those found on early southeastern pottery.
