Linus Benedict Torvalds (born December 28, 1969, Helsinki) is a Finnish-American software engineer and one of the most influential figures in modern computing.

As a pioneer of the open-source software movement, Torvalds created two monumental projects that form the backbone of today's global digital infrastructure: the Linux Kernel and the Git Version Control System.

Key Achievements and Projects

Linux Kernel (1991): What started as "just a hobby" while he was a student at the University of Helsinki has grown into an operating system kernel powering billions of devices—from supercomputers and cloud servers to Android smartphones and embedded IoT devices.

Git (2005): Created in a matter of weeks to manage the massive distributed development of the Linux kernel, Git has become the global industry standard for source code version control.

Subsurface: Fueled by his personal passion for scuba diving, Torvalds developed this open-source dive log software to download and manage data from dive computers.

Torvalds continues to oversee the kernel's development, acting as its "Benevolent Dictator for Life" (BDFL) and maintaining final authority over what gets merged into official Linux releases.
