Election Day has a way of settling arguments that weeks of advertising cannot. On Friday, days before Texans voted, the report landed: an email address James Talarico’s own lawyers confirmed was his appears in the breached database of Fling.com, attached to a profile listing f*tish and group s*x interests, created in December 2010, just before he started teaching sixth graders. His lawyers say he never created the account, that the email was hacked, that the birth date and zip code do not match, and that the account was active for less than a minute. Voters get to weigh the validated email against the denial. That is what today is for. The reason the story landed so hard is not the profile alone. It is the pattern it fits. Talarico has spent this campaign preaching faith and family values while hidden-camera tapes caught him promising one audience the most inclusive policy in the country and telling another he will change his tune once elected. He knew the names of the drag queens. He took the leash from the streamer who called immigration police a secret police force. The voters who watched all of that unfold did not need a lecture on hypocrisy. They needed a ballot, and today they have one. The final polls called this race a tie, and ties are broken by turnout. Ken Paxton spent the closing days doing the job he is running to keep: his office arrested people for voting as felons on parole, acting on a citizen’s tip, while his opponent spent the closing days explaining emails and videos. That is the choice in front of Texas today. Polls are open until seven tonight. Get out, bring your family, and render the verdict the whole country is waiting on.
The Diagnosis of a Dead Generation A blob-shaped patient walks into the doctor's office feeling old, and the physician, rather than checking blood pressure or running labs, simply asks about musical taste. The answer, a love of mid-2000s emo, gets scribbled onto the clipboard as a terminal prognosis: patient is basically dead. The joke lands because everyone who grew up with My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy on repeat knows exactly what it feels like to watch their defining cultural moment get carbon-dated in real time. Rome had a version of this. The older patrician class clung to the Republic's traditions, its rhetoric, its music, its civic ceremonies, long after Augustus had rewritten the entire operating system of the state. To the new imperial generation, loving the old forms was not nostalgia, it was a clinical indicator that you were a relic. Suetonius and Tacitus both document how the language of the Republic was kept alive in Senate chambers while meaning absolutely nothing to anyone under forty in the street outside. Every empire cycles through this. The Ottomans had their janissaries who refused modernization and paid with their lives for it in 1826. The Persians under Darius III were still tactically brilliant by the standards of a previous century, which is precisely why Alexander's oblique cavalry charge at Gaugamela read like a doctor writing "patient is basically dead" on a very large clipboard. The prank is that every generation believes its cultural peak was the real one, the permanent one, the one history would recognize as correct. Rome believed that too. Rome is a ruin. #AncientRome #BreadAndCircuses #HistoryRepeats
