In a conversation with Steven Bartlett, Dr. Mike Varshavski explained how easy it is to consume calories compared with how much effort it takes to burn them. A large fast-food meal with a burger, fries, and soda can easily reach 1,000 calories and take only minutes to eat. Burning that same amount of energy could require hours of moderate exercise or roughly 90-120 minutes of intense running, depending on the person and activity.

That doesn’t mean exercise isn’t important. Exercise supports cardiovascular health, muscle strength, fitness, and longevity. But when it comes to managing body weight, food intake can have a much larger impact on daily energy balance because consuming large amounts of calories is so easy.

You can’t erase every high-calorie meal with a workout. The goal is to make both your diet and your activity work together.

Calories in, calories out. Want to loose weight? Find and make habit of eating really dense foods that have little calories per unit mass. That's it.

Run sustainably (but not slow to you) for an hour, that is estimated to be 1000 ckals burned

I've been eating almost exclusively salads for the last 2 months or so and I've lost five kilo, dude was probably sneaking snacks inbetween his salads or using heavy mayo based dressing. Just eat right and you'll lose weight bro.

Word to Dr. Mike here. Being a molecular biologist building a thesis in hepatic immune changes in metabolic disease, diet is critically important. HOWEVER, I always get super annoyed by the idea that you should NEVER have foods that you think are tasty. A well rounded diet imo is built by robust support of healthy foods, but also food that nourishes your spirit. A diet isn't something you do for a few months, it is something you (should) carry with you for a lifetime. Same with physical movement. You don't need a boot camp, you need an activity that incorporates physical movement that you LIKE doing and will want to do forever. A healthy life is not one of suffering through food and exercise, it's incorporating healthy habits into the things you already enjoy.

the exercise/ diet industry want to tell you you need a b c d and e and make it all into this mystique to pay pay pay pay… its not… its physics… (and yes its not always this easy but) generally you need to consume less calories than you burn… whats difficult is comfort/ boredom/ insecurity familiarity eating…. salt fat and sugar plague easy access food.. in shops… and take aways… we are too invested in certain ‘tastes’… also drinking beer or other alcohol is extremely calorific .. extremely … and encourages unhealthy eating habits…. also some activities can encourage the body to go into survival mode and ‘hold on’ to fat deposits …
