Today I grabbed one tail from a very small struggling stand, the only one in our community, and spread the seeds. Shake one in the wind and the seeds fly. Nature is amazing. As I walked around I realized there are tons of seed heads forming on the phragmite. Tomorrow I'll be clipping seed heads from the invasive phragmite. Way leads to way. This plant spread through seed and riazome I am only addressing half the problem. It's a start.
The phragmite is holding the land. It has some use.
Not sure if my efforts will make a difference. I absolutely know what doing nothing results in. As you resist the thing that is damaging the environment, remember to plant the things you want to grow. Without the native catty nines we don't have red winged black birds. I don't see snapping turtles anymore (we had enormous, kind of scarey large snapping turtles when I was kid).
This post isn't just about taking back and restoring nature's order. Spend time, resources, and energy planting the seeds you want to sow.
Fun fact, catty-nine-tails are also called wild glizzies.
