Popps Packing is excited to welcome Karl Larsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) to the Popps Packing Residency for the months of September and October!
It’s Karl’s first time ever in the United States, and his first stop is Detroit!
Karl Larsson is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice intersects photography, archival activism, and independent publishing. He studied Exhibition Design at Mälardalen University, Lighting Design at Jönköping University, and holds an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in London.
Since 2003, Larsson has been building The Million Project—an extraordinary archive of more than two million photographs documenting the structures and textures of everyday life. This monumental archive became the foundation for PUUT (Publicering & Utlåning), a nomadic artist’s book library he initiated in 2018.
Through PUUT, Larsson explores the possibilities of publishing, lending, collaboration, and collective art-making. With 186 titles and 52 collaborations, the project challenges conventional ideas around how art is produced, circulated, owned, and remembered.
Rooted in a radical DIY ethos and traditions of self-organization, Larsson’s exhibitions and workshops function as active social situations rather than simply displays. His work brings together the roles of artist, librarian, publisher, and audience, creating spaces for exchange and encounter outside traditional commercial art structures.
We’re thrilled to have Karl in Detroit for the next two months and can’t wait to see what conversations, collaborations, and projects emerge from his time at Popps Packing.
Welcome to Detroit, Karl!
