Hallstatt is one of Europe's most charming villages. But far more than its postcard worthy views, Halstatt is famous for having the oldest salt mine in the world, known as Salzwalten which then played a major role in the village's industry. What also makes this village unique is that the houses appear to be built on top of one another. Due to the narrow space of land between the mountain and the lake, locals eventually built houses that are close to one another and up the mountainside while others were built out over the lake on wooden piles. Hallstatt was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in the late 90s. Today, it is home to approximately 740 people.
