Gary Woodley
‘Impingement No. 70 (Helical Corridor)’, 2026
PVC tape
Dimensions variable
£6,000
Helical Corridor is the seventieth work in Gary Woodley’s impingement series. Initiated over thirty years ago, the series explores how platonic volumes can be placed in dialogue with a physical architectural space, inspired by the formation of soap films. Using three-dimensional CAD modelling systems, Woodley projects these volumes into interior spaces and onto exterior surfaces.
For this installation, Woodley projected a helicoid (a spiral or screw-like geometric surface) into the gallery space. Positioned at head height, its centre is rotated through the space at a 3.5-degree tilt from the horizontal axis, creating a dynamic diagonal cut. Using black PVC tape, Woodley marks the moments where this projected volume intersects with the gallery’s interior space, before extruding outwards into its entrance.
Helical Corridor traces an encounter between a real and imagined architecture.
