I remember reading Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker before bed one night and having to read the same section about four or five times because I genuinely thought I was misunderstanding it. 😳

The research he was talking about is pretty wild:

People who were restricted to only 6 hours of time in bed per night for 14 nights developed cognitive-performance deficits comparable on some tests to staying awake for roughly 24 hours straight.

And maybe the craziest part?

They didn’t necessarily FEEL as impaired as they actually were.

That’s what makes chronic sleep restriction so sneaky.

You start getting used to being tired.

Being slightly foggy becomes normal.

Needing caffeine becomes normal.

Having less patience becomes normal.

Performing at 80% starts feeling like 100% because you’ve forgotten what 100% actually feels like.

Now, obviously, life happens.

We go out.

We travel.

We dance until stupid hours of the morning. 😂🕺🏼

And I’m definitely not telling anyone to stop living their life just so they can have the world’s most perfect sleep score.

But if we can start making sleep something we actually PLAN for instead of something we squeeze into whatever time is left over, I think most people would be shocked by how much better their days start to feel.

More energy.

Better focus.

Better training.

Better dancing.

Better mood.

Bigger, brighter days.

I talk a lot more about sleep and how I’m trying to make it work with festival life in the latest episode of The Unbreakable Dancer Podcast.
