When we started working with Syracuse we had one question: where did this massive orange mascot come from?
Since its founding Syracuse has had its fair share of mascots. They’ve gone through a goat, a controversial warrior, a gladiator and even a cowboy - but despite all of this, they decided to settle on an Orange named Otto.
Emerging in the early 1980s, Otto represents the welcoming spirit and energy of Syracuse University. As Chancellor Kent Syverud described in 2016, Otto is “part of our spirit” and speaks for the entire university and its culture.
