The Queen
@temsbaby was in town on Friday and not even cramps could stop me! 😭
So I think I want to yap a little.
Tems is one of the very few artists on planet Earth that I feel truly connected to. I discovered her music in late 2018 through Mr Rebel. A friend put me on, we used to watch the Aux Sessions on YouTube a lot back then. I knew I had found a gem and I’ve been obsessed ever since.
Looku Looku came next and then Try Me…
I remember learning the entire lyrics to the song the day it dropped and my baby brother had to ask how I knew how to sing the song so well despite the fact that it had literally just come out that day. 😂
I remember exactly where I was in life then. I knew that wasn’t where I wanted to be. I knew I had to leave and grow, but at that point, obviously, I couldn’t.
II grew up different from everyone in my family and my dad kept thinking he’d be able to “tame” me because “Northern people don’t behave/live like that. What will people say?” That was his own. 😂
Try Me was so relatable to me because it was raw and authentic. It really inspired me. It made me confident in the fact that yes, I’m different. I might not be who people thought they wanted me to be, but I knew who I was and who I wanted to be, so I held on.
And I think the extra connection for me is the fact that I’ve watched both Tems and I grow.
This was my third time watching Tems perform and it always feels so unreal. I remember the first time I saw her perform in Abuja in 2019, I think, at Harrow Park. Then December 2023. And then Friday.
Whew.
I watched that growth. I supported that growth. And I’m so happy for the privilege to witness that growth. 🥹
Today, I’m in a much better place than I was in 2019. That little girl has built a better life for herself, and she’s still building. 🥹
So yeah… Try Me!
Grateful to
@spotifyafrica for putting together this amazing event! We definitely need more intimate, quality events like this more often. 💚
I left a little something for you in the last slide 🙃
