when we were living in Laiya, we had this secret beach we went to with rock formations and crystal blue waters, a tiny cave & not one human in sight. I remembered that beach here in Duli. Not as remote, but it gave the same good energy that took me back to 2018✨

someone asked me yesterday why it was so easy for me to choose family first all the time, and it’s really because of moments like this. I want my kids to always remember all the time we spent with them and how we were a large part of their childhood🧡

Day 2 of resharing some of my favorite memories with Nonno ❤️🪽

My nonno and nonna’s story began in Latronico, a small mountain town in southern Italy. Their families were friends, so they had known each other their whole lives, but they started dating when my nonna was just 14 and my nonno was 16.

My nonno came from a humble family, but he had big dreams. Those dreams took him to Naples to study medicine, and after earning his degree, he returned home and married my nonna.

Just one month after their wedding, he left for America, where the rest of his family had already settled, hoping to build a better life. My nonna stayed behind while he spent a year working, saving, and getting established. When he had enough money, he sent for her to join him. Soon after she arrived, they welcomed my uncle Paul and began building their family together.

That young boy from a small mountain town went on to become a family doctor with his own practice in Astoria, Queens, where he cared for generations of families over more than 60 years. To so many people in the neighborhood, he was someone they knew, trusted, and loved.

Above everything, though, he was a family man. He loved the life they built in America, though he stayed so connected to the people and the town where it all began. Until the very end, he kept close relationships with his cousins and family in Italy. Hearing the affection people speak about him with, whether they knew him as family, a friend, or their doctor, says so much about the person he was.

My grandparents went back to Latronico every summer, and as they got older, those visits stretched into months. My brother and I grew up spending our summers there with them, too. We got to know the people, the food, and the traditions they had grown up with, and made our own memories in the place where their story began.

That little town will always hold such a special place in our hearts because of them. They gave us a life here, and they gave us roots there. I’m so grateful we got to share both.
