What does a voice look like? Here's mine via a DIY eidophone a la Margaret Watts Hughes. Cymatics babyy.
Singing a sustained note into the device vibrates a membrane covered in salt crystals. Those crystals order into shapes depending on the quality of the tone. Altering the tone midway becomes a way to draw with the voice.
This is the Word in action, bringing source and silence to sound and form and back again.
These parabolic shapes remind me of being 3, closing and pressing my eyes, and revealing the optic nerve. That soft ellipse has always enchanted me, a shape I could see without opening my eyes...and somehow it feels like a way back home, where we all came from...
My first eidophone is very simple: a 4x4x2 piece of PVC with a balloon stretched and ziptied around the edge.
Before the voice...the inner voice...in quietude...
