David Rees Davies ARWS

‘Recent portrait of Alva Funnell’ (watercolour) I’ve drawn and attempted painting Alva a few times- each previous times she sat with her characteristic wide smile and sparkling mischievous eyes, always full of stories from her youth-especially as a very young life drawing student at the old Brighton College of Art. Her anecdotes of one her contemporary classmates Michael Heath (who went on to fame doing Great Bores of Today for Private Eye magazine) are wicked. Covid put the kibosh on the last sitting.
I still own one of Alva’s exquisite decorated mugs with a murmuration of starlings, which I seem to recollect using in a still-life.
