Distinguished Archaeology Lecture Fall 2026 with Dr. Scott Hutson
October 7th & 8th

Dr. Scott Hutson (University of Kentucky) is an anthropological archaeologist working primarily in Yucatan, Mexico. He has diverse research interests – including urbanism, inequality, and economic anthropology, and is prolific. He is the author of about a hundred peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as author or editor of about a dozen book length manuscripts. He has received numerous grants, including multiple from the National Science Foundation and from the Wenner-Gren Foundation, as well as numerous awards, including being named the University of Kentucky’s 2025 University Research Professor. He conducted fieldwork at the archaeological site of Chunchucmil between 1998 and 2006, and his most recent major field project is the Ucí-Cansahcab Regional Integration Project. Beyond these topics, he has also written about the history of Maya archaeology, the disciplinary structures that shape archaeologists as subjects (through analysis of citations), the processes of subjectification as inferred from children's graffiti at Tikal, spiritual transformations in rave subcultures, and the role that archaeological ruins play in the identity of contemporary farmers in Yucatan.
