Meet "Brad." Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' new campaign ad for her welfare-to-work requirement stars a young white guy playing video games, eating cheese balls, and living on your tax dollars. "You pay taxes to cover welfare for guys like Brad who just choose not to work."
Work requirements for able-bodied adults? Great policy. The casting is another matter.
Census data: among working-age Americans (18–64), non-Hispanic white men have the lowest rates of Medicaid coverage (11.3%) and of living in a household that gets SNAP (7.8%) of any racial or gender group. The overall rates are 16.1% and 12.6%. In Arkansas, white men are below the state average too: 16.2% on Medicaid vs. 19.1% overall.
So out of every demographic available, the ad picked the one least likely to be on welfare. Funny how "Brad" is always the safe villain.
