The results are in! Following the vote across our website and Facebook group, Machka the Anatolian Shepherd Mix is officially elected the 3rd Honorary Dog Mayor of New York City, with a final tally of 4,877 votes to 4,589 votes for Dr .Computer Chips the Shih Tzu! It was an extraordinarily close race—the lead changed hands 12 times throughout the day, with a surge in voting in the last hour—but Machka’s momentum proved decisive! Dr. Computer Chips will assume the role of Machka’s right-hand pup, serving as Deputy Dog Mayor of NYC! We’ll have a fuller breakdown of the round’s results in our next Substack entry, so read and subscribe at the link in our bio! We want to extend our deepest thanks to Dr. Computer Chips and all of the pups who ran for NYC Dog Mayor—it’s a grueling process and we’re grateful to all who participated. Our gratitude extends to our followers and supporters from both NYC and around the world—over 20 countries voted in the final round alone, proving that our message of positivity, kindness, fun, and civic engagement knows no borders! But the ballot-casting isn’t over! Please get out and VOTE in today’s Human Being Election Day, to ensure that Machka isn’t the only great person elected to office this week! Machka and Dr. Chips will take the Oaf of Office at our indoguration ceremony on the steps of NY City Hall on Sunday, January 17! The ceremony will mark the Peaceful Transfer of Pawer from our current Mayor Simon, who has served with great dognity and forthrightness! And keep an eye on our Instagram, Facebook page, and our website for updated brackets, info about upcoming contests and events, and more! #DogMayorNYC
Here’s how to write a hook so good it is scientifically impossible to skip. This is called the Triple Hook Method. And if you do this right, it will hypnotize the viewer in a way where they physically cannot scroll away. Step 1 is the Context. This is the basic step, but so many people still get this wrong. Viewers only watch content where they have a vested interest in the topic. So the first line of the hook must establish context on what the video will be about. You can say it in the audio, show it in the visuals, write it in the text or caption, ideally all 3 aligned, but this context must be established immediately. We’ve have data that shows even delaying context towards the end of the first sentence causes the skip rate to go way up. So priority number 1 is to set immediate context. Now Step 2 is where most people mess up. This is the lean. What you’re trying to do is get someone curious in a certain direction. You want them to lean in on the context and actively want to hear more. Now you can make this lean happen in a variety of ways… But regardless of which method you pick, the viewer must lean in and not opt out. So when you read back that first 1-2 sentences on its own…is the context clear and is there something curiosity inducing that would make you lean in and want to hear more? Context Lean…this is what “opens the curiosity loop” you hear people talk about. Now step 3 is really where the money’s made. I call this, the Contrarian Snapback. To catch a fish, you get the hook in its mouth swimming one way, and then you jerk back the other way. Not to be morbid. Storytelling is the same way. The goal is to say something that pulls the viewer away from the direction they were just leaning. Essentially, snapping them back down another path. Is the god-tier hook formula that works every single time. Entering my birthday month like ♏️ @tberolz had Claude roast his photos from our entire photo archives. The biggest takeaway was that over the years (and more specifically since having less time to shoot since becoming parents) we developed patterns that worked for us. He and I pushed ourselves to think differently and switch things up in Paris. These were some of my favorite results.
