Siouxsie and the Banshees — “Spellbound”
Released in 1981, “Spellbound” is one of the defining songs from Siouxsie and the Banshees, appearing on their fourth studio album, Juju. Driven by John McGeoch’s rapid, swirling guitar work, Budgie’s powerful drumming and Siouxsie Sioux’s haunting vocals, the track created an atmosphere that was dark, hypnotic and incredibly energetic. Produced by Nigel Gray, “Spellbound” captured the band at a creative peak and became one of their most enduring recordings.
Siouxsie Sioux was already one of the most distinctive figures to emerge from Britain’s late-1970s punk movement, but by the early ’80s the Banshees were pushing far beyond punk. Alongside Steven Severin, Budgie and John McGeoch, Siouxsie helped develop a more atmospheric and experimental sound filled with unusual guitar textures, tribal rhythms and eerie imagery. Her dramatic makeup, fashion and commanding stage presence also became enormously influential on the alternative and gothic scenes that followed.
More than four decades later, “Spellbound” still sounds remarkably powerful. Juju is frequently regarded as one of the Banshees’ essential albums, and McGeoch’s inventive guitar playing on tracks like “Spellbound” influenced generations of alternative musicians. The song remains a perfect snapshot of the moment when post-punk was becoming darker, stranger and more adventurous.
