درحالی که شمارش آرای انتخابات میان‌دوره‌ای آمریکا ادامه دارد، گاردین می‌نویسد، دموکرات‌ها در رقابت‌های نزدیک برای کسب کرسی‌های مجلس نمایندگان آمریکا پیروز می‌شوند و انتظار می‌رود پس از دو سال از دومین دوره ریاست‌جمهوری دونالد ترامپ، کنترل مجلس نمایندگان را به دست بگیرند. هیل نیز می‌نویسد، دموکرات‌ها روز سه‌شنبه کنترل مجلس نمایندگان آمریکا را به دست گرفتند و پس از چهار سال حضور در اقلیت، اکثریت این مجلس را از آن خود کردند. به گزارش «دسیژن دسک اچ‌کیو»، این تحول آغازگر دوره تازه‌ای از دولت تقسیم‌شده در آمریکا خواهد بود؛ وضعیتی که در آن کنترل کنگره و کاخ سفید در اختیار دو حزب متفاوت است.
این تغییر از سال آینده پیامدهای فوری برای روند اداره واشنگتن خواهد داشت؛ برنامه قانون‌گذاری دونالد ترامپ را با مانع جدی روبه‌رو می‌کند و زمینه را برای رویارویی‌های متعدد میان مجلس نمایندگان و کاخ سفید بر سر موضوعاتی چون اجرای قوانین مهاجرتی، هزینه‌های دولت، تعرفه‌های جهانی ترامپ و جنگ ایران فراهم می‌کند.
جمهوری‌خواهان در حال حاضر ۲۱۸ کرسی مجلس نمایندگان را در اختیار دارند و شمار کرسی‌های دموکرات‌ها ۲۱۴ کرسی است. (یک کرسی متعلق به جمهوری‌خواهان و یک کرسی متعلق به دموکرات‌ها خالی است و یکی از نمایندگان جمهوری‌خواه نیز عضویت حزبی خود را به مستقل تغییر داده است.) دموکرات‌ها برای به دست گرفتن کنترل مجلس نمایندگان، باید سه کرسی را از جمهوری‌خواهان بگیرند.
تمام اعضای مجلس نمایندگان هر دو سال یک‌بار برای انتخاب مجدد رقابت می‌کنند. برای کسب اکثریت در این مجلس، یک حزب باید دست‌کم ۲۱۸ کرسی را در اختیار داشته باشد. اگرچه هنوز درباره شمار کرسی‌هایی که دموکرات‌ها ممکن است به دست آورند ابهام‌هایی وجود دارد، مؤسسه غیرحزبی «کوک پولیتیکال ریپورت» پیش‌بینی کرده است که دموکرات‌ها بین ۱۵ تا ۲۵ کرسی به دست خواهند آورد؛ نتیجه‌ای که می‌تواند شمار کرسی‌های آن‌ها را در مجلس نمایندگان به ۲۳۰ تا ۲۴۰ برساند.
