🥊 CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT: JOEY LOPES 🥊
The World Boxing Hall of Fame proudly honors Joey Lopes, a hometown boxing legend whose name holds a special place in Sacramento and West Sacramento history.
Lopes began his professional career in 1949 and went on to compete in nearly 90 professional bouts, earning more than 50 victories and 22 knockouts. Known for his skill, toughness, and outstanding defense, Joey shared the ring with some of boxing’s biggest names, including Sandy Saddler, Joe Brown, Flash Elorde, Don Jordan, and Jimmy Carter.
Before turning professional, Joey competed in the 1948 U.S. Olympic Trials, establishing himself as one of the region’s standout amateur fighters. In 1955, he scored a memorable victory over reigning World Featherweight Champion Sandy Saddler.
Joey’s impact extended far beyond the ring. After his boxing career, he remained connected to the sport and helped guide another Sacramento boxing favorite, Pete Ranzany. His hometown legacy is also celebrated through Joey Lopes Park in West Sacramento, named in honor of a man remembered as both a boxing champion and community leader.
