25 years ago. I was in 6th grade. I remember sitting in my last class of the day. Ms. Vogel’s science class and an announcement was made throughout the building. “If you have one parent who works in New York City, they may be home late tonight. If both of your parents work in The City, please come to the front office now”. Somehow our teacher taught all day as if nothing has happened that morning. They went about their day like normal for us all. Because that is what teachers do for their students when things fall apart, they keep the world going to maintain a safe, secure space for their students. I will never forget 25 years ago. Just like I will never forget the first time I entered a student’s birth year as a teacher and thought to myself, “wow this kid was born after 9/11, they have no idea”. There is a generation of us, who were right there, we must make sure that those whose lost their lives are not forgotten. May their memory be a blessing.
