Upon graduation, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and went on Active Duty in September 2017 as a Signal Corps (Communications) Officer. I've been serving in that role since. My duties have primarily focused on the management of radio, satellite, and computer communications systems, to include IT management and the development of all military exercise communications plans.'.

The realm of big data, Al, and machine learning has begun to play an increasing role in the military. LLMs, as one example, are being widely used and encouraged in our work environment. There is now a specialized job among the Officer Corps for data scientists. My father received his Master's from CU Boulder in 2009 while was in high school; loved it here then and wanted to come back. The MS-DS program here just ended up being the perfect fit.'.

My only hesitation stems from my own struggles with programming, but the professional environment here is a significant advantage. Having attended other institutions where academic professionalism was lacking, marked by late grading or unresponsive communication, I can say have had none of those issues at CU. If you are On the fence, can say without a doubt that CU Boulder is one of the most beautiful, enjoyable, and friendly campuses in the U.S., and | do not regret my decision to attend.'.

Meet Samuel šŸ‘‹ @sbmeaux19

His path to data science didn’t start in computer science, as you might expect. After studying Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, Samuel commissioned into the U.S. Army, where his work has centered on communications systems, IT management, and planning.

Now, as an on-campus MS-DS student at @cuboulder he’s adding data science, AI, and machine learning to that background — while getting a little more time with his family along the way.

We appreciated Samuel’s candor about programming. If that part of his experience sounds familiar: you’re definitely not the only one. Students enter data science with different strengths, and programming can be a steeper part of the learning curve for some.

For future students, one practical takeaway: building some Python experience before starting can make that transition easier.

There’s more than one path into data science. Samuel’s is one of them. What's yours? Share with us!
