"We can now let these offenders die in obscurity while we forever remember and honour the victims.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom has commuted the death sentences of all 548 people on death row in the state, changing them instead with life in prison.

The decision to spare death row inmates is largely symbolic in a state that has not executed a prisoner since 2006, though experts say it could save millions of dollars in court costs each year.

It comes as Newsom, the Democratic leader of the most populous US state, has been discussed as a possible 2028 contender for president.

Caleb Williams made his mark at USC as one of the most talented quarterbacks in college football, winning the 2022 Heisman Trophy after throwing for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns. After transferring from Oklahoma, Williams quickly became the face of the Trojans program under Lincoln Riley, bringing an explosive playmaking ability that made him one of the most difficult quarterbacks in the country to defend. Despite his individual success, USC struggled to reach its ultimate goals, and Williams experienced several heartbreaking losses during his two seasons in Los Angeles.

One of the most memorable moments came on November 4, 2023, after USC suffered a 52-42 loss to Washington. Following the game, Williams climbed into the stands, found his mother and broke down crying in her arms as she comforted him. The video quickly went viral, sparking conversations about athletes showing emotion and whether professional players should be comfortable expressing their feelings publicly. Williams later explained that he had been holding everything in until he reached his mother, and said he wasn’t ashamed of showing how much the game meant to him. Rather than viewing it as a weakness, he hoped the moment would encourage others to be more open about their emotions.

This was a 17 hour billable day, and I want to be honest about it instead of pretending it doesn’t happen. Some days in this job are just like this, as the deal needs what it needs, and you find out what you’re made of somewhere around hour thirteen. I don’t romanticize days like this and I don’t resent them either. They’re part of what I signed up for, they’re not every day, and the career I’m building is worth the occasional day that takes everything. If you’re heading into a week that scares you a little, you can do hard things. I watched myself do one.
