On May 25th, while playing basketball with friends, I fell backwards as I attempted a three-pointer. At first, I brushed it off, but later that evening, the pain became unbearable.
After going to urgent care and then seeing an orthopedic specialist, I learned that I had a displaced scaphoid fracture that required scaphoid open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). I spent my 20th birthday on June 1st getting an EKG and bloodwork done for my pre-operative assessment. Then, on June 5th, I underwent surgery.
The months that followed meant three hard casts and learning how to do almost everything with one hand. Simple everyday things became challenges, and I had to learn how to adapt while putting many of the things I love on pause.
Looking back, this journey taught me patience, resilience, and to appreciate the things I once took for granted. I wouldn’t have chosen this experience, but I’m grateful for what it taught me and for everyone who was there for me along the way.
A huge thank you to my doctors, my baritone section, my friends, my family, and everyone who checked up on me, encouraged me, and stood by me throughout this journey. Your support meant more to me than I can put into words, and I truly appreciate every person who was there for me. ❤️
Now, I’m healed and ready for the next step. I start occupational therapy on September 17th to rebuild my strength and movement and work my way back to everything I love. There’s still work ahead, but I’m grateful to finally be moving forward and getting back to the things I love.
Sometimes the hardest chapters teach you the most.
