Buyelekhaya.

There is something about gospel music that can take you home. This episode is inspired by “Buyelekhaya” by @nontokozo_mkhizeh , a song about returning home to find hope when you feel like you’ve lost it.
As a child who grew up in a Zion Church, faith has always been central to my life. Within that faith, how you dress matters.
In my church, we wear blue and white, finished with a white doek. The colors carry their own symbolism, and clothing becomes part of the language of worship. So for church today, I wore my long skirt from @mrpfashion , blue and white shirt, and, of course, my doek.
The white sandals were intentional too. I needed shoes that wouldn’t restrict me. Shoes that would let me gwaba when the spirit moves me. Over time, I’ve come to associate those movements with a kind of somatic healing. There is something about allowing the body to move, shake, bend and release, that feels like its own form of prayer.
My sister was actually told off at church today because her shirt revealed her collarbone. Harsh? Perhaps. But many of us grew up navigating rules about how much of ourselves we were allowed to show.
Despite the complicated relationship many of us have with church, faith, and the trauma that can sometimes accompany them, there is something beautiful about still having spaces in society that take dress and uniform seriously.
Not because clothing determines your holiness, but because what we wear can carry memory, identity, respect, belonging and tradition.
This is Garage Fashion too.
Not just the clothes we wore, but the places that taught us how to wear them.
