“Vivian”, Christina Hesselholdt, 187 pages (2016/2019) – Finishing my break from Proust with this fictional biography of the French-American photographer Vivian Maier. Maier, you may recall, worked as a nanny and amassed thousands of photos over decades. Her work was discovered near-posthumously, and she was celebrated as an outsider artist with a camera. Hesselholdt condenses and twists the facts in the self-reflexive narrative, revealing that Maier was much less naive than she has been made out to be. I can’t remember where I bought this, but maybe it was purchased at @destiil_books ? #vivianmaier #christinahesselholdt @fitzcarraldoeditions
