Chidra: A loophole, fault, defect, or an opening.

In 'Future Relic: Chidra,' Jemana Murti presents the Singha, the mythical winged lion regarded within Balinese culture as a symbol of protection and spiritual guardianship. Here, however, Murti alters the figure, removing a section of its body to leave a perfectly square hollow cavity.

Within Murti’s practice, distortion becomes a strategy for negotiating tradition and modernity, reconfiguring how we encounter and interpret visual heritage. First reconfigured through digital processes, the artwork is then cast in bronze at Gajah Gallery’s foundry, YAL. The sculpture brings technological processes into dialogue with traditional forms, considering how seemingly disparate temporalities and systems of knowledge might converge

'Future Relic: Chidra' emerges from this rupture—a glitch between continuity and disruption, suspended somewhere between past and future, and is currently on view until October 11 in 'Holding Structures, Soft Bodies' at Gajah Gallery Manila.
