Standing 123 feet high over the West Yorkshire landscape, the magnificent Hewenden Viaduct is a true masterpiece of Victorian engineering. Opened in 1884 as part of the Great Northern Railway, its challenging, hilly terrain quickly earned this line the nickname the "Alpine Route". Built primarily to transport goods and passengers between northern mill towns during the peak of the textile boom, it stood as one of the tallest railway structures in the country. The line fell victim to the Beeching cuts and officially closed in 1963. Today, this Grade II listed giant has a new lease on life as a breathtaking section of the Great Northern Railway Trail, allowing walkers and cyclists to trace the steps of industrial history. 📍 West Yorkshire
