Bossi was teaching at the Rome University of Fine Arts in Milan. Every Wednesday would end the same: the artist and his assistant – the writer Rosso Rota – would head to a small restaurant near Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo (Church of Saints John and Paul) in the city’s Bovisa neighbourhood.
Designed by Luigi Figini and Gino Pollini, the Church’s construction began in 1964 and was consecrated three years later. Its interior spaces are organised around the motif of a Greek cross, repeated across several axes and illuminated by nine large cruciform skylights set above the presbytery.
Week after week, Bossi would bring his camera on these outings, but never took a picture. The space felt ungraspable; the moment indefinite. In late May, after lunch on the last day of the semester, Bossi returned to the church one final time. Visiting at the exact same hour, he found the space transformed. Light, falling through the skylights, cast itself across one of Church’s corner, revealing a scene as if for the first time.
