Linha do mar

Linha do mar
Praxe, a centuries-old student initiation tradition that combines play, power and submission, continues throughout the country. In December 2013, six students died on Meco Beach, Portugal. This tragedy could have been part of Praxe, a test for “high-ranking” students in which rite is a form of discipline, and discipline is the language of belonging. Students stand with their backs to the ocean, blindfolded. For each wrong answer, they take a step back — closer to the water. The ritual symbolizes purification through fears and the transition from darkness to light. Ignorance must remain in the ocean. This is called “Linha do mar”. The ritual is said to be inspired by Fernando Pessoa’s «The Hour of the Devil”.>
