The Binance hackers that came away with $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency last week used elaborate fake job interviews, malicious software viruses, and internal AI tools to infiltrate the wallet infrastructure, Binance co-CEO Richard Teng told CNBC on Tuesday morning. ⁣ ⁣ Teng reiterated to CNBC that the breach was not the fault of one employee and their laptop, but rather a complex and lengthy process.⁣ ⁣ Since the heist, Binance has temporarily restricted some withdrawals. They have also pledged to cover all customer losses, even tapping into their own reserves to do so. Roughly $3 billion in assets have been frozen by Binance and fellow crypto homes like Coinbase, Tether, Circle, and Ripple in the wake of the attack.⁣ ⁣ As of Tuesday, Binance has recovered and/or replenished 98% of the $6.34 billion in affected assets. In addition, they have taken measures to rebuild the affected wallet system and internal AI tool, replace compromised devices, decommission credentials and tokens associated with the affected engineers, and expand security scans across employee devices. All of this work, Binance hopes, will ensure something like this does not happen again.⁣ ⁣ While Teng himself did not attribute the attack to North Korea, he did acknowledge that the FBI has linked it to North Korean hackers tied to the group “TraderTraitor”.⁣ ⁣ 📸: Sony, Warner Bros.
